Thomas recently had watched this on “Schlag den Raab”:
This game is called Jakkolo (or Sjoelbak in Netherlands). And as we like to play, he immediately ordered one for us – ignoring the fact that this game is two meters long and cannot be folded, but hey! We’ll put it under the sofa until we have a big house with an own room for games like this!
The game arrived yesterday and is now occupying our dining table. But never mind, the game is great fun!
In the video above the players only had 12 of these wooden disks but in a real Jakkolo game you have 30 of them. The field is 2m long and 40cm large. You have to move the disks into the goals at the end of the field trying to get as much points as possible.
For each goal you get a different amount of points (marked there):
If you manage to get a row = one disk in each goal, you get 10 extra points (and so you will for every other row you make).
Every player has three turns. After every turn you get the disks back that haven’t slipped into the goals. After these three turns your points are counted and it’s the next player’s turn. This procedure goes over three rounds in total. The winner ist the one who has the most points in the end.
This game is very popular in the Netherlands where it has a tradition of 400 years already! And even if it looks easy, it isn’t easy at all to hit exactly the goals. You might also end up with a complete chaos of disks lying in front of the goals and blocking any new one!
So you not only need to be skillful to place the disks in the right way. You also need to find techniques to get around such block situations by slipping the disks to the boarder and let them kick the blocking ones (a bit like billiard).
Have you ever tried this game? Or would you like to?
Then come to see us and we’ll get that thing on the dining table! (Charlie, there’s no escape!)
