Suomi forever!

October 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

There is this really hilarious sketch of German comedian Hape Kerkeling about Finish Eurovision songs (even if you don’t understand German it’s still great!). I always thought he had made up the songs but…

…BUT! These songs really exist!

Song no.1 was performed in 1988 by “Boulevard”:

Song no.2 was performed by Fredi (!) in 1976! And I can’t say which is more funny – Hape Kerkeling or the original:

Santana: Smooth

June 11, 2009 · 1 Comment

Accidentally stumbled across this song again today on tv and remembered the great times I had while living in Speyer when the “Supernatural” album of Santana was all new. We played this song on and on in the bar and club that was part of the house I lived in by then. Here it is: Enjoy!

a-ha: “Foot of the mountain”

June 6, 2009 · 9 Comments

Couldn’t be long before the video would appear on YouTube:

Before it was broadcasted on Viva last night, it had been already online on the Viva-website but apparently only visible to users with a German ip (which imho wasn’t fair). That’s why I had made some Screenshots for the fans I know abroad.

The video seems to relate to “Hunting High and Low” in a few camera perspectives and the idea of the floating bubbles…

a-ha7

… reminded me of the moving ray of light in “Analogue”.

I only wonder what the bubbles and especially huge bubble at the end of the video are meant to symbolize.

Any ideas out there?

Justin Currie in his own words

May 20, 2009 · 1 Comment

After Werder Bremen losing the final of Uefa-cup today there was one song immediately coming up in my head: “Make it always be too late” by Del Amitri performed live by Justin Currie. So browsing through related videos on YouTube I stumbled upon this interview (2 parts – as part 3 didn’t load) with Justin – who imho is one of the (as he’d most probably add) “fucking” great musicians ever:

Il concerto di Angelo Branduardi

April 25, 2009 · 2 Comments

Angelo Branduardi 1

Here we are back from a gorgeous concert of Angelo Branduardi. He played in the concert hall of the Bonn Brückenforum that is only five minutes walk from where we live.We had already been to one of his concerts there beofre and so we knew it was going to be a great evening.

Our seats were on the right outside but third row, so we could still see quite well. The only problem was the fact that the right front speaker was almost in front of us so the sound got a bit rattling for us sometimes.

In the first part Branduardi – who praised the Germans to be his most understanding and faithful audience – presented songs from his Francesco program (see introduction and  finale) starting and ending this part with “Il Cantico delle Creature”. Here’s a short video I made of this song:

After a short break he started the good old songs that everybody knew. Several of my favourites were played too, like “Vanità di Vanità” or “Ballo in fa diesis minore” (song starts at 5.38 in this video but for those who understand Italian it’s worth to listen to what he tells there too!).

My video of “Alla fiera dell’est”:

Of course il maestro got standing ovations and had to play several encores including “Cercando l’oro” (to make the audience sing along), a wonderfully fragile version of “O sole mio” and “La luna”.

I realised there were some other people taking videos or photos, will have to search the web within the next days ;-)

Grazie per una grandissima sera, Angelo! :-)

Jakkolo night?

February 21, 2009 · 1 Comment

Finally we’ve managed to play Jakkolo. As Charlie and I have occupied the dining room table with the art stuff there had been no room to put the Jakkolo board. But today we improvised by adding the balcony table to half of the dining room table. The result was a bit unstable but it worked – well, it would have, if I hadn’t got out the Vallhall dvd of a-ha. :D

So we had to interrupt the match time and again for Charlie and me to run to the tv and sob a bit because of “aaaawwww THAT’s my favourite song”! ;-)

Poor Thomas must have been really annoyed but he tried to take it as a man. At least this made him see that I’m not the only one who’d cry because a-ha are on tv. ;-)

Thomas managed to see the funny side of it

More coming soon on Charlie’s blog and photos in my FlickR photostream.

This freaky voice in my head

February 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Do you know this weird experience to wake up with a song in your ears that you just cannot get rid of? That’s what happened to me today with these two songs by Jan Delay.

This is usually not my kind of music at all but this freaky voice just cannot be forgotten. ;-)

Liebeslied (Love song):

And his cover version of Nena’s “Irgendwie Irgendwo Irgendwann”:

Valkyrien Allstars

February 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks to Pål I’ve got to know the “Valkyrien Allstars” today. What a great music! Listen yourself:

Here’s how they describe themselves on their myspace:

Valkyrien Allstars is not a normal hardangerfiddle group. With traditional music as a basic, VA has developed a totaly new, smooth sound, inspired of many different music-genres. The members of VA is: Tuva Syvertsen (1983), Ola Hilmen (1984) og Erik Sollid (1984). Soulfull and strong vocal mixed with funky fiddles and collective improvisation has become VA.’s image.

I only wonder why they have disabled the function to add their songs to your profile on myspace? That’s a pity. It would have helped spreading the word even more.

They have a fanpage on facebook too. Their website is supposed to be valkyrienallstars.com but wasn’t loading when I tried today. I’ll try again later…

R.E.M. “Nightswimming” live

January 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A twitter conversation with Bernhard Jodeleit lead me to the music of R.E.M. tonight, whose Muppetssong “Furry Happy Monsters” had been in my ear all day anyway

(For all those who don’t know twitter: you read this from bottom to top)

And this is how I discovered this video:

For me the absolutely BEST SONG of R.E.M. ever!

What’s your favorite R.E.M. song?
